How to Multiply Column by a Percentage in Excel
To multiply a column by a percentage in Excel, you can use a simple formula. Follow these steps to multiply a column by a percentage:
- Open your Excel workbook and navigate to the sheet with the data you want to multiply by a percentage.
- Ensure that your data is in a column with no empty cells. For this example, let's assume the data is in column A, and you want to multiply it by 20%.
- In an empty cell, enter the percentage that you want to multiply the column by, and format it as a percentage. In this example, enter "20%" in cell B1, and press Enter.
- Click on cell B1, and then press Ctrl + C to copy the percentage.
- Click on the first cell of the column where you want to store the results. For this example, let's use column C.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow to select all the cells in the column down to the last cell with data.
- Right-click on the selected cells, and choose "Paste Special" from the context menu.
- In the Paste Special dialog box, select "Multiply" under the "Operation" section and click "OK". This will multiply the values in column A by the percentage in cell B1 and display the results in column C.
Example
Let's assume we have the following data in column A:
A
1 100
2 200
3 300
4 400
5 500
We want to multiply this data by 20%. Follow the steps mentioned above:
- Enter "20%" in cell B1.
- Copy cell B1.
- Click on cell C1.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow to select cells C1 to C5.
- Right-click on the selected cells, and choose "Paste Special".
- In the Paste Special dialog box, select "Multiply" and click "OK".
After completing these steps, the results in column C will be:
C
1 20
2 40
3 60
4 80
5 100
These values are the result of multiplying the original data in column A by 20%.
